“You are the light of the world. ….they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” –Matthew 5:14-16
Growing up, I have often sung the song, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.” but in all honesty, I can’t say that I have really known what that means. Physically, we don’t all walk around with light bulbs on our heads, do we? Of course not! As I have begun to understand God’s Word in its proper context, I have begun to understand what “shining your light”really means.
Let’s take a look at 1 John 1:6-8: “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin”.
The word light means “knowledge,” and the word darkness means “ignorance”. The Kingdom of Light and the Kingdom of Darkness are in a constant struggle with each other. Hosea 4:6 says that God’s people perish because of a lack of knowledge… Prov 4:5-7 says we must get wisdom and understanding – the Word is full of these scriptures. Take Joshua 1:8 for example “If you meditate on my Word day and night… you will have good success!
School of Thought
So to shine your light really means to know God’s truth and to be vigilant in it. Don’t be ignorant. Jesus said that if we abide in His Word, we are His disciples (students of a school of thought). See John 8:31. Shine that knowledge before men and light the way for others to follow (Ps 119:105).
