“You shall know that your tent is at peace, and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing“. -Job 5:24
The bible says in Hebrews 12:14 (NIV) that we must“work at living in peace with everyone…”. It also describes peace as being one of the effects of the Kingdom” (See Romans 14:7). Colossians 3:15 says that we must “let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts…since as members of one body, you were called to peace”. (Also see John 14:27). John 14:24 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you…” In Mark 4:39 Jesus spoke to the storm saying “…Peace be still…”
There are many verses on peace in the bible, but the thing to note here is that the biblical meaning of peace is not the absence of war, it is the Hebrew word ‘shalom’, which takes its meaning from the verb ‘shalam’ and it is used in the context of making restitution. When a person has caused another to become deficient in some way, such as a loss of livestock, it is the responsibility of the person who created the deficiency to restore what has been taken, lost or stolen. It literally means to make whole and complete. The noun ‘shalom’ has the more literal meaning of being in a state of wholeness or with no deficiency. To the storm in Mark 9:34, Jesus was essentially saying let order be restored to you…
Action Plan: We literally need to take stock of our lives and see if there is an area where we may have caused offence or taken offence and work on restoring peace. We need to trust God to show us how to make amends. God’s grace and mercy has opened up wide the gates of forgiveness. We are to take hold of the grace afforded us and let it bring about the freedom from the stigma that sin brought. Today look into your heart and ask God to reveal those to you who need your act of peace and your restitution. When you choose to walk with God, then peace will not only be upon your tent but you will find nothing amiss.
